Why should I study English Language & Literature? 

If you love reading then this is the course for you! You will build on the foundation of analysing a writer’s craft and consider social, historical and cultural context to fully explore the impact of a text. You will engage in lively debate concerning personal and critical responses to texts ad build your knowledge of links across literary genres whilst applying theory and wider reading. You will develop your skills of independent study as reading around the taught texts is essential for success in the course.

What will I study?

Literary genres: You will study prose, poetry and drama focused on the theme of love through the ages. You will read Othello by William Shakespeare and Wuthering Heights by Charlotte Bronte as well as a poetry anthology provided by the exam board.

Literary time periods: You will study prose, poetry and drama focused on concepts evident in modern literature (post 1945) You will read Feminine Gospels by Carol Ann Duffy, Top Girls by Caryl Churchill, Oranges are not the Only Fruit by Jeannette Winterson.

Theory and Independence: The course has a Non Exam Assessment which comprises of a comparative critical study of a taught text and a student selected text, one of which must be pre -1900 (20% of A Level)

What can I do with A-Level English Literature?
