Further Mathematics
BackIs this course for me?
Studying Further Mathematics A-Level will:
- Deepen your understanding of mathematical concepts far beyond the standard A-Level course
- Develop advanced problem‑solving skills, analytical thinking, and mathematical fluency
- Provide highly stimulating and intellectually challenging content for students who enjoy mathematics
- Strengthen your application for a wide range of STEM degrees, particularly those including mathematics, physics, engineering, economics, and computer science
Specific Entry Requirements: Grade 8+ in GCSE Maths (you will study A Level Mathematics alongside Further Mathematics)
The Basics…
At KES, we follow the Edexcel A Level Further Mathematics syllabus. Students study a combination of compulsory Core Pure Mathematics and optional applied or pure modules. For this pathway, pupils complete:
- Core Pure Mathematics 1 (CP1)
- Core Pure Mathematics 2 (CP2)
- Decision Mathematics 1 (D1)
- Further Pure Mathematics 1 (FP1)
Full support is provided both in and outside the classroom, including access to expert staff, and structured revision resources.
What will I learn?
Core Pure Mathematics (CP1 & CP2)
- You will explore advanced concepts that form the foundation of higher-level mathematics, including:
- Complex numbers and their geometric interpretations
- Proof and mathematical structure
- Matrices and transformations
- Series and convergence
- Hyperbolic functions
- Differential equations
- Further calculus and vector methods
- These topics underpin university-level mathematics, physics, and engineering.
Decision Mathematics (D1)
- Decision Maths focuses on applying mathematical techniques to real-life processes and systems, such as:
- Algorithms and algorithmic complexity
- Graphs, networks, and optimisation
- Linear programming
- Critical path analysis and scheduling
- Route inspection and shortest paths
- This branch of mathematics is widely used in computing, logistics, data science, and operational research.
Further Pure Mathematics (FP1)
- This unit extends your pure mathematics skills even further, covering:
- Complex number algebra
- Further matrices and determinants
- Roots of polynomial equations
- Summation of series
- Transformations
- Numerical methods
- FP1 forms an excellent bridge to university-level mathematics and theoretical subjects.
Anything else I need to know?
Further Mathematics is one of the most respected A Levels and is regarded as a major advantage for students applying to competitive universities. Research consistently suggests that students who study mathematics and further mathematics often have access to higher‑earning career pathways.
Further Maths is relevant not only to STEM subjects but also to areas including finance, economics, architecture, data science, and computing.
Future careers:
The advanced analytical, logical reasoning and abstract thinking skills gained through Further Mathematics open doors to a wide range of careers. Roles closely linked to the subject include:
- Engineer
- Data Scientist
- Statistician
- Software Developer
- Analyst (Financial, Business, or Operational)
- Mathematician / Academic Researcher
- Economist
- Actuary
- Accountant
